Say N' Play Camp

The Say N' Play Summer Speech Camp, now in its 10th year, is our most popular program. Our camp is an intense speech and language based program taught by licensed and graduate level speech pathologists. Also included are behavior interventionist who assist with our children who present behavior challenges. Our innovative camp is thematically based and includes weekly field trips to exciting locations such as the Adventure City, Aquarium of the Pacific and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, children receive individual or group speech therapy two times per week from our culturally diverse staff of licensed or CFY speech- language pathologists. Over the years, this fun-filled camp has gained in popularity, drawing staff and families from around the country.

Our staff to child ratio is 1:4 or 1:2, depending upon each child's need. Our support staff are college students from schools across the country who typically are in the field of communication disorders, psychology, or a related field.  We also include very responsible high school volunteers whom we affectionately call "speech buddies." The students are the best and brightest from local private schools, many of whom return annually to work with our children. Their role is to serve as "buddies" to the children while also stimulating speech and language in an unobtrusive manner. They are not professional staff nor are they included in the staff to child ratio making our actual ratio even richer.

Since 2006, our campers have been provided choices of several fun afternoon electives.  Those offered include Senses Alive, Drama Kings and Queens, Busy Builders, Chess, Cooking, Sign Language, Tennis Anyone?, Picture Taking and Scrapbook Making, Clay Play, The Sound of Music and Get Hooked on a Book.  Children work in groups and look forward to their afternoon activities.  Campers are able to work with children of all ages as well as different staff and specialized instructors.

The highlight of camp 2007 were the performances by the children which concluded each 4 week session. Families and friends in session I were treated to our “Real” American Idol performance where there were singers, dancers, musicians and actors. Children were amazing in their performances.

The second session participants were treated to a performance by the children in the elective, Drama Kings & Queens.  The children put on a spectacular performance called “It’s Ok to Be Me!” at our upstairs stage. The play was written by the children and directed by Ashley Wiley who received her B.S in theatre Arts from UNC Chapel Hill. The performance area was full of staff, families, friends, and other campers.  While the expectations are always high for our children, the children exceeded our expectations. The campers wrote the text, read the script several times, memorized lines, and created costumes for themselves and sang a closing song. They were absolutely incredible! The children were proud of themselves and we were proud of them.

Camp 2008 will be even more enriching as we plan for new and returning campers. We will host two 4 week sessions: Session I will be from June 23 - July 18 and Session II will be from July 21 - August 15 as well as a special class which will be held the first two weeks of camp and the last two weeks. Their dates are June 23- July 3 and August 4-15. This will be for a very small number of children. Space is limited and our sessions fill up quickly. The Cost is $2100.00 or $2600.00, depending on the staff to child ratio as determined by our team.

We have begun screening, to determine each child's needs and their appropriateness for the 2008 camp.  If your child is accepted, a non-refundable registration fee of $150.00 will be required to hold the space and will be applied toward their tuition.
